Mission Rabies Goa: A Global Success Story
Launched in 2013, Goa became the pilot state for Mission Rabies - our bold campaign to eliminate human rabies deaths. Since then, we’ve vaccinated over 400,000 dogs, visited 1,400 schools, and engaged communities across the state. In 2021, Goa became the first Indian state officially declared a “Rabies Controlled Area” - a landmark achievement in public health.

Mission Rabies is a flagship project of WVS, working to stop a disease which takes a human life every 9 minutes worldwide.Thanks to an integrated approach, Goa has seen a dramatic reduction in rabies cases and in 2021 became the first Indian state to be declared a ‘Rabies Controlled Area’, setting an example for other states to follow.Mission Rabies Goa is deeply connected to the ongoing efforts at the WVS Hicks, with veterinary professionals being trained in high-standard surgical techniques, humane dog population management, and rabies control strategies.
How We Eliminate Rabies
Vaccination
Mass dog vaccination, door-to-door services, and catch-vaccinate-release programmes ensuring both owned and free-roaming dogs are protected across the entire state.
Education
Reaching 170,000+ children annually through 1,400 schools, plus community outreach and digital campaigns to build awareness and prevent incidents.
24/7 Surveillance
Round-the-clock Rabies Hotline (7744029586) with integrated bite case management and rapid response teams for suspected rabies cases.
